Primary Research — UTOPIA2016 — OUGD601

A large part of the primary research was this visit to Somerset House to see the exhibition entitled 'UTOPIA2016 — A Year of Imagination and Possibility'.

This exhibition, as stated in the image;

'...celebrates the 500th anniversary of Thomas More’s inspirational text. A year of artists, designers, provocateurs and thinkers experimenting with ways we might live, make, work and play.'

It is this idea that More's ideas can be utilised as a catalyst of inspiration for creatives from all walks of art and design. This will be the primary objective within the practical element, using the Utopian Alphabet, which is featured within More's book;

utilising this language via the digital rendition by Jeremy Deller and Fraser Muggeridge studio as typographic form within the concrete structures assist in communicating the strong links between Modernist/Brutalist architecture (The concrete aspect) and Modernist graphic design (The typographic aspect).

This exhibition was a great opportunity to explore the different interpretations of utopianism, and it really presented how subjective Utopianism can be, due to the sheer variation or the work presented.
